One of the most popular minerals we have in the Gallery is Amethyst. It is the birthstone for the month of February. There are many different sizes and varieties available. We carry everything from Chevrons and Brandburgs to small and large geode forms. Amethyst is a form of Quartz, and many consider that the finest color comes from Uruguay. Brazil is another large producer of excellent quality Amethyst.
A very special type of Amethyst is the Brandberg variety. The crystals originating from the Brandberg region of Namibia are the highest quality in the world and unique in the mineral kingdom. The current location where the Amethyst Quartz is mined is named the Goboboseb and is a few miles west of Brandberg. The area yields what are arguably some of the most beautiful crystals in the world. They are known for having exceptional luster and are often filled with phantoms of amethyst and smoky quartz. Most remarkable of all are the rare enhydro crystals. These have bubbles which move in cavities of water rather like an ethereal spirit level. The conditions under which they form give rise to crystals full of deep purple Amethyst and Smoky Quartz. The hardness is 7 and the composition is SiO2
